Throughout life everyone will spend time being single. However, stigma and peer pressure can sometimes get in the way of enjoying singleness. You could be made to feel like it’s better to be in a relationship and that you should be in one. It’s important not to give into this way of thinking. Remember, everyone starts out as individuals not in relationships. Some people chose to be in a relationship, but some people prefer to be single. Others are single due to the circumstances they find themselves in, for example they could have been in a relationship but their partner left, or they moved to a different city. Whether you choose to be in a relationship or prefer not to be, what counts in learning to be confident in yourself, being the best you can be and making the most of the circumstances you find yourself in.
It is also better to be single than be in a damaging and unhealthy relationship. For more information about healthy relationships and unhealthy relationships see our page on Being in a relationship.
