For everything you need to know about the law relating to drink driving, go to the Don't Take Risks website. It’s worth having a look at, because very few people actually know what the legal limits for driving are, and the police and courts are really cracking down on offenders.
Just as a quick reminder, the blood alcohol limit (the amount of alcohol you are allowed in your blood) for driving in public roads in Scotland is currently 80mg per 100 ml of blood. It is really difficult to translate this into the amount of drinks you can have, because different people will be able to drink different amounts, and even things such as the amount you’ve eaten or if you had a drink the night before could affect how quickly alcohol enters the bloodstream.
It’s much safer not to drink at all if you’re going to be driving – remember if you’ve had a heavy night you can still be over the limit the next morning. It can take 12 hours to be safe to drive after having a bottle of wine! If you’re caught drink driving, you face a driving ban, a large fine and the very real possibility of a prison sentence. If you injure someone else as a result of this, the consequences are even more severe. An average of 16 drivers in Scotland aged between 17-25 are involved in a road accident every day.
For loads of information about road safety and the government’s campaigns on keeping safe on the roads, have a look at the Road Safety Scotland website.
The Brake website also gives loads of information and advice about road safety, driving offences and support for those who have been affected by road accidents in some way – either as a direct victim or if you care for a victim, or have lost someone as a result of a road accident.
