Boy Next Door AKA Richard Davidson, 22.
I've been writing songs with my best friend Jennifer since we were about 9, but only took a serious interest in it when I was about 14. I started studying Standard Grade music, and my parents bought me a keyboard. That kind of unleashed exciting possibilities, and I found I could properly start writing songs.
To be honest, I think I needed a class to fill my timetable!! Best decision of my life.
After learning the basics of playing the keyboard, it wasn't a huge stretch to go on to playing the piano. I started getting piano lessons, and then when I was in 6th year I took about a year's worth of singing lessons too. I then began experimenting with really basic music production software, and I fell in love with the production aspect too. Since then I've been working on my production skills. I created a 4 track demo CD, which was given to producer Timothy London, who suggested we try working on an album together. So when I've written a song, I'll create a version and send it over to Tim, who'll then enhance and add or remove different parts.
I've done some solo gigs, and some gigs with just a guitarist and myself. Currently I'm working with a live band towards performing in the Forth One to Watch competition on November the 6th.
Before Tim and I started working together, Tim basically asked to me to explain my music and personality to him. I just told him I want it all to be accessible - the songs that I write are all about stuff that's happened to me. Personality wise, I wouldn't say I'm one of those musicians who are really in your face. From that perspective, it's the boy next door telling you a story.
Musically I'd say Delta Goodrem was a huge influence in the beginning. I really listen to all kinds of stuff though, from current radio to Jazz, Dance, Country....
I play piano and synths.
Yeah! I think that's the best way to do it to be honest.
It was an acoustic night with Jennifer back in 2003 I think! We thought we were the bee's knees. Whenever we listen back now to old recordings it's cringeworthy.
I played at a talent show in my last year of school. There was quite a big crowd - that was an amazing feeling.
When everyone's playing their parts and you hear the song come to life.
Probably the Spice Girls? Say you'll be there.....
I think trying to find some kind of funding to release the album when it's done will be pretty difficult. Fingers crossed though.
Keep practicing, don't give up, and remember you're going to make mistakes - but that's how you learn and get better.
