Meningitis can affect anyone at any age, so it's important to find out what it's all about.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and the spinal cord (known as meninges) caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
The main types of meningitis are:
Viral - which is non-fatal
Bacterial - which can develop into meningoccal septicaemia (very dangerous)

At first many people can mistake it for flu as not all these symptoms may be present.
If you suspect that you have meningitis get medical help immediately- even if you aren't sure.
