When you move in, there are a few things you should do right away. Check the locks, the doors and windows, and the smoke detectors. Safety first, remember! Make sure you know where the fuses are trip switches, and how to switch off the water and the gas.
And speaking of the gas, it’s also important that you register with your electricity and gas companies right away, or you risk paying any bills the previous tenants or owners didn’t pay. Have the meter readings ready when you call. If you’re not sure about who provides your gas, call the Transco Meter Helpline on 0870 608 1524. For the electricity, call Energywatch: 08459 06 07 08.
While you’re at it, you may wish to connect your phone. You can connect by calling 150 from the disconnected line, or use your mobile or another phone to call. There are plenty of companies who offer phone services so shop around before you commit. You can visit U Switch to compare phone and energy deals.
And finally, register for your council tax, if you postpone or try to evade council tax it is likely that you will get stung for a huge bill when your local authority catches up with you.
You may be eligible for discounts, depending on your living situation. Examples of discount eligibility can include student status and living on your own.
