TV licences are valid for a year and currently cost £145.50 for a colour telly or £49 for a black and white one.
The TV Licensing site says 'You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, digital box, DVD or video recorder, PC, laptop or mobile phone to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV.' This means that you require a TV licence if you are watching live programming. If you watch TV via online catch-up you are not requied to pay for a licence.
If you don’t have a licence, you risk a £1000 fine (plus legal costs) so it’s important to get one. You’ll even need one if you’re a student living in halls and have your own TV in your room. Also, make sure you let the TV Licensing folk know if you move house so they can keep your records up to date.
You can apply online or at a PayPoint outlet.
You can pay all at once by BACS electronic transfer, by cheque or by Credit or Debit card
Alternatively, you can pay monthly by Direct Debit to spread the cost.
Customers of Lloyds TSB, NatWest or RBS with an online bank account can renew their TV Licence online using a free online bill management service. Contact your bank for details.
However you do it, just make sure you get one – the last thing you need when you’ve just moved out is to get stung with a massive fine!
