"A lot of parents tell their children that if they want to be an actor, that's fine, but they should do something else first, so that they've got something to fall back on. It doesn't work like that as far as I'm concerned" Ewan McGregor
If acting is your passion then youth theatre is for you. Groups are run across the country for and by young people. They take many different forms – some meet up weekly for drama classes and theatre arts skills workshops and some meet up on a project by project basis – e.g. to work towards a production, performance or festival.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in acting, directing, choreography or stage management, on stage or screen, then youth theatre is a great place to start. However, even if you don’t want to work in the business, then it can be a great way to make friends, learn new skills and improve your self-confidence.
The cost of being a youth theatre member varies from place to place; some are free, some you pay at each class and some charge per term. Check with the individual youth theatre.
It is estimated that there are over 300 youth theatres in Scotland and that over 8,000 young people take part in youth theatre activity every week! There is almost certainly a youth theatre near you - to find your nearest group or find out more information contact Promote YT, the national agency supporting the development of youth theatre.
